Arlene M.
Carter
Feb 13, 1927 — Aug 10, 2024
On Saturday August 10, 2024 at 4:15 in the afternoon our dear mother went to her heavenly home. We cannot express the depth of love and respect we feel for the beautiful matriarch of our family.
Arlene Mae Anderson - Carter was born on February 13, 1927 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Ernest Anderson and Evelina Crowder Anderson. She was the fourth born of nine children. She is predeceased by both parents, six siblings, one son-in-law Gerald Williams, and one granddaughter. She is survived by sister Barbara Anderson Mimms of Ashland, Massachusetts and Warren Anderson of the Boston area, two daughters, Bernadette Carter Williams, Vernita Carter Weller, one son-in-law Timothy Weller, residents of Vermont, six grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, including numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.
Arlene was married to the predeceased Rev. Vernon E. Carter (2007) of Boston for 22 years and after a separation served in the Boston area as a social worker for the South End Settlement House and the Big Sister Association. She is also commemorated at the Embrace Sculpture on the Boston Common as a part of the 66 honorees of the 1965 Boston Civil Rights Era. She was best known for her full time service to humanity from diverse walks of life, often experiencing providential encounters in unlikely places.
Although she is known for both her community contributions as a young woman and her personal encounters with individuals throughout her life, she is better known for her powerful faith in God. Many leaders and clergy throughout the years recount sitting with her in their offices absorbing her experience and wisdom. The community of believers, especially here in Vermont, have personally experienced that wisdom, the power of her prayers, encouragement, sensitivity, and loving nature. Those who knew her well not only witnessed that deep faith in God but was subject to her unique sense of humor.
Full of love, laughter, and resilience, she touched the lives of all who knew her. To commemorate her incredible journey and to celebrate the love she spread, a memorial service will be held in her honor at Ignite Church, 1037 South Brownell Rd in Williston, Vermont on Thursday August 15, 2024 at 10am, followed by a committal service at Deer View Cemetery in Williston, VT.
We will then enjoy a time of reflection and refreshments at the church. We invite all who knew her to join us in remembering a truly remarkable woman of faith, family, and service. Cards and flowers may be received at Ignite church by 9am day of celebration. Cards can also be sent to Timothy Weller, 185 Mead Lane, Middlebury, Vermont, 05753.
