Dr. Bernard F. Byrne, age 82, of Northfield, Vermont passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the Respite House in Colchester, Vermont.
Bernard was born in Charleston, West Virginia to Francis and Eileen (Neilan) Byrne on June 12, 1944. He married Mary E. Comiskey on July 11, 1996. He was highly educated and graduated from the Carnagie Institute of Technology in 1966 with a BS in Civil Engineering, the University of California Berkley in 1967 with a MS in Civil Engineering, the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 with a PhD in Civil and Urban Engineering, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1994 with a MS in Computer Science. He was a professor at Vermont State University (formerly Castleton State College), and worked for many years at Dubois and King as a transportation engineer. He was involved in Scouting and was an honored eagle scout. He recently received the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, son Todd Byrne, brother Kevin Byrne, sisters Mary Patricia Wyatt and Shelia Sousa. He is survived by his wife Mary E. Comiskey, sons Vince, Andy and his wife Pamela, Paul and his wife Linda, Matt, and Mark. He also leaves grandchildren Alex, Harmony, Maggie, Miracle, Cassidy, Adowyn, Brendyn, Sam and Nate, and siblings Jim Byrne and Sue Byrne-Heath.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, July 26, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Avenue, Northfield, Vermont. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Norwich University Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
