Bernard R.
Crowley
Oct 17, 1957 — Dec 13, 2025
Bernard "Bert" R. Crowley, 68, of Burlington, Vermont, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025, while in the company of family and a close friend.
Born October 17, 1957, in Burlington, Bert was the third of eight children of Leonard James Crowley and Dorothy Ann (Beaudoin). He grew up in Burlington and remained closely connected to the community throughout his life. He was predeceased by his parents and by an infant sister.
Bert is survived by his siblings Ann-Marie (Dale) Germain, Mark (Lori) Crowley, Diane (Tracy) Blondin, Laurie (Russell) Sabens, Gerard Crowley, and Timothy (Elizabeth) Crowley, along with many nieces and nephews who were important to him.
Although Bert never married or had children, he experienced a deep and lasting love with his longtime partner, Sharron Fortune, who passed away in 2020. He also treasured his beloved cats, Abby and Zeva, whom he treated as family and deeply missed after their passing.
Bert graduated from Burlington High School in 1975 and proudly served in the United States Air Force as an Aircrew Egress Systems specialist. Following his honorable discharge, he built a long career as a general contractor, continuing to work until shortly before his passing.
Those who knew Bert will remember him as a man of quiet strength, deep empathy, and authenticity. He carried himself with a calm and steady presence and was known for handling life's difficulties without anger or resentment. His kindness showed through loyalty, humility, and genuine care for others.
Bert was fortunate to be surrounded by many friends who became like family, offering companionship, care, and steady support over the years. He was especially grateful to Gail and Pete, Maureen, Billy, Bobby-Jo, Keith, Robbie, Mark, and many others whose kindness enriched his life. The family apologizes to anyone unintentionally omitted. He was also deeply appreciative of his nephew Don Crowley, who opened his home to Bert and provided a place where he felt comfortable and truly at ease.
Bert had many interests and passions. He was a devoted Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing, motorcycles, NASCAR races, and friendly games of cards or cribbage. A natural tinkerer, Bert loved working with his hands and was known for saving just about everything, always believing it might serve a purpose someday.
At the time of his passing, Bert was with his nephew Don Crowley and close friend Gena DeLong, whose presence and care brought comfort during an unexpected moment. Their support during that time will always be deeply appreciated by his family.
A gathering and visitation to celebrate Bert's life will be held at noon on Friday, December 19, 2025, at LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main Street, Winooski, VT with a memorial service at 1:30 pm. Family and friends are invited to share stories and memories in remembrance of a man who lived quietly, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
