Obituary

Carolyn S. Hawkes, 91, a third-generation Colchester resident, passed away on a sunny autumn Friday, October 10, 2025, at home under the care of UVM Home Hospice. Carolyn was born in Colchester on August 12, 1934, to Carrol and Flossie Stone. She enjoyed memorable travels to Florida, Niagara Falls, Canada, Massachusetts, Las Vegas, and Maryland.

Carolyn was a devoted board member, choir member, and Sunday School teacher at the Williston Church of the Nazarene, where she also created beautiful floral arrangements. She loved camping, gardening, painting, taking drives to see the changing seasons, and attending family events. She will be remembered for her gentle soul, loving embraces, and her warm welcome to all who came to her home.

As a young woman Carolyn worked in accounting at New England Tel & Tel. Upon meeting the love of her life Arthur Hawkes, who she was married to for 59 years, she turned her focus to raising four children as a stay-at-home mom. Then later in life she took up a new career as a floral designer at Ethan Allen Florist. She will be remembered as a cake baker, gingerbread house architect, and a fan of family game nights with dominoes, old slides, and laughter. Carolyn recently had her artwork featured in a traveling exhibit for the Alzheimer's Association at the State House in Montpelier, highlighting art created by people living with dementia, a show that will travel throughout Vermont this year.

She is survived by her children and their families: Stephen; Diane and Rich, with grandchildren John (& Arlene and Raymond), Nick (Nick Jr., Noah, Charles Arthur, Lucas), Brendan, and Anica; Art, Lori, Christopher, Jenn and Dave (Braxton and Brody); Sandy, Tim, and Hannah. She also adored her Noel family nephews Marc (& Sara), Shawn (& Kelly), and Matt (& Whitney), with loving embraces for Rachael, Alyssa (& Julian), Ellie, Jack, Abigail and Blakely, as well as her extended relatives.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Sr. (2018), her parents, brothers Paul and Birney Stone, and sisters Mary Noel and Dorothy Safford,

A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 10:00 a.m. at the Williston Church of the Nazarene, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:00pm at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington.
