Obituary

Christine VanHorn of Huntington, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 24th, 2024 at the age of 91, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 22nd, 1932, in Lewiston, Maine, to Vinton and Evelyn (Merriam) Savage.

Chris attended school in Augusta, Maine and graduated from Cony High School in 1950. She went on to graduate from the Salem School of Nursing in 1954.

Her nursing career spanned 49 years. Her early years were at a small hospital in Wisconsin where she cared for all types of patients and also delivered babies from the nearby Reservation. This developed her love for Native American history. In 1973, the family moved to Vermont and she worked at the University of Vermont Medical Center (then known as MCHV). Chris worked as a flex nurse among many units there, and spent the last 20 years there in the Shep 4 Cardiac unit.

In 1953, Christine married the love of her life and best friend Weldon VanHorn. Weldon and Chris were married for 65 years and made many happy memories together. She loved her children and was very proud of the adults they became.

She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her mother and father-in-law, her brother Vinton "Bud" Savage, her sister Eileen "Teenie" Poulin, and by her beautiful granddaughter Kelli.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her sons Dana (Patty), Patrick, Mike (Elizabeth), daughters Benita (Mark), and Cindy. Christine is survived by her grandchildren Theron (Gina), Mallory (Ryan), Jeremy (Amy), Ryan, Alex, Ava, Madison, Carson, and great grandchildren, Sophia, Audrie, Olivia & Myles. She loved her grandchildren and they brought great joy to her life.

At Chris' request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral services. A private burial will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Chris' memory to the McClure Miller Respite House.

Arrangements are in the care of Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot Street, Richmond, VT.
