Donald L. LaCroix, 93, passed away on October 24, 2026 at Our Lady of Providence Residence in Winooski, VT, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Winooski, VT to Leo and Maria LaCroix, Don moved to Burlington at age 13 and graduated from Burlington High School. In 1954, he married Roberta Gilbert, shortly before being drafted into the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, the couple returned to Burlington, where Don lived in the same home for 67 years and became a cherished neighbor.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and friendship. To know him was to love him. His warm spirit, sense of humor, and genuine concern for others earned him the respect and affection of all who crossed his path. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Though he will be deeply missed, his love remains woven into the hearts of his family, whom he often described as the greatest blessing of his life. In his healthier years, Don was known for snow blowing half the street, cat-sitting for anyone who asked, and sharing his famous Oreo balls with friends, neighbors, and anyone lucky enough to stop by. His generosity, kindness, and willingness to help others made him a beloved friend and neighbor, and he will be remembered for the countless small acts that made a big difference in the lives of those around him.
Don owned his own trucking business before becoming Distribution Manager at H.P. Hood Milk Company. A talented woodworker, he crafted beautiful furniture and countless wooden toys for his grandchildren. After retiring, he devoted many volunteer hours to St. Joseph School and Church, as well as the convent and parish thrift store. He loved helping others and was an active volunteer with Age Well’s senior meals program.
Don was predeceased by his beloved wife, Roberta, in 2012, after years of devoted care during her battle with Alzheimer’s - a dedication that inspired everyone who knew them.
He is survived by his daughter, Denise (Michael) Brault, and his son, Donald (Irene) LaCroix. He treasured his role as "Papa" to his grandchildren, Justin Brault, Sarah (Matthew) Hodgson, Amanda (Benjamin) Depo, and Allison (Stephen) Hayes, as well as his three great-granddaughters, Amelia and Georgiana Depo, and Rosalie Hayes, who was born just two days before his passing. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion, Marilyn Provost.
Our family would like to thank the caregivers at Our Lady of Providence Residence and Bayada Hospice nurses for the care they gave dad in the last months.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Cathedral on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 10:00am with burial following at New Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association , Vermont Chapter, 75 Talcott Road, Suite 40, Williston, VT 05495, a charity that was especially meaningful to him.
