Obituary

Donald Mark Shackett, 85, of the Manor Nursing Home passed peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, October 15, 2024. He was in Hospice care due to returning Prostate Cancer.

Don was born August 12, 1939 in the first Copley Hospital, to Angelina (Delisle) Shackett and Roland H Shackett of Stowe, Vermont.

He attended Morrisville schools and graduated from People's Academy in 1959. He met Anne LaBarge of Eden that year and they were married November 19, 1960 at Holy Cross Church in Morrisville, VT, by Rev. Omer Dufault. They were life-long members of Holy Cross, now Most Holy Name of Jesus They almost celebrated their 64th anniversary this year.

Don joined the Air National Guard with his friend Richard Moody in January 1961 and they were in Basic at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and then in the Reserves for 3 years after.

Don and Anne had 4 sons, Lloyd, Brian, Steven, and Dennis. Don worked at multiple types of jobs in Morrisville until 1965 when he started working in assembly at General Electric in Burlington. Most of those years on second shift. When he was not working or sleeping, he designed and built their home in Morristown Corners. When asked if he ever got tired of traveling to work in Burlington, he said, "If I would have, I would have by now." He retired in 1994 after 29 years at GE.

Don and his parents moved and rented many times, so he was very satisfied to live in his home with Anne, their children and beloved pets in the Corners, for 52 years, amongst great neighbors.

Don was a 4th Degree member of Fr. Boivin Council #5041 Knights of Columbus and was treated like a true Brother, working with them on fund raisers and Community events like building a room for a great Neice with Make -A-Wish, assisting with many events for the Church and local community.

He was a mechanic and enjoyed tinkering on Antique and Classic autos. He and Anne loved cruising in their 1956 Ford pickup and then their 1968 Thunderbird car. He also owned several motorcycles.

He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed very much his time with family and friends at their deer camp in Cabot. He also got very into Jigsaw puzzles and word searches that continued into his time while at the Manor.

Because of several head injuries since 2015, Anne has had help with Don's care from Lamoille Home Health and our granddaughter Ashlea until he had a stroke in January of this year. He was at Copley Hospital until late March, when he entered the Manor. Don became a social butterfly and got hooked on BINGO, old country music and other wonderful activities.

Don was predeceased by his fraternal Grandmother Etta Shackett of Shackett's Orchestra, his father Roland, mother Angie, all his uncles, aunts on both sides, some cousins, one niece and nephew, his Father & Mother-In-Law, two Sisters-In-Law, and very special friends from GE and neighbors.
