Obituary

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Edward Merwin Brown of Windsor, CT passed away in Vermont where he spent his summers. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Brown (nee Bowman) in November 1952. They were married for sixty-eight years until her passing on January 13, 2021. Edward was survived by his four children, Dorothy Hurley of Barre, VT, Alan, also of Barre, Timothy of Philadelphia, and Stephen of Woodstock, GA. He also leaves behind a brother, Merwin of Windsor, CT, and seven grandchildren.

Upon his graduation from Norwich University in 1954, he took a commission as a 2LT in the United States Army where he honorably served for 22 years. His assignments took him to combat zones in Korea and South Vietnam (two tours), as well as an overseas assignment in West Germany and various assignments across the United States. His final duty station was on Ft Ord, CA, where he retired from the Army. Upon his military retirement, he and his family, towing a travel trailer, zig-zagged their way back to Windsor, visiting numerous landmarks and friends across the country.

In the fall of 1977, Edward embarked on a second career, leveraging his military service as a teacher of military studies at LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, NY. He and Elizabeth lived in nearby Sayville until his retirement from LaSalle in 1991. From there, he returned to Windsor where he lived for the next 30+ years.

Together with his wife, Edward enjoyed skiing and hiking in their native New England and elsewhere for as long as their bodies allowed, but their true passion was traveling the country in their RV. Their travels took them from Maine to Alaska to Florida and everywhere in between, visiting old friends and making new ones along the way. When the rigors of the road became too much, they restricted their travels to shorter trips, before ultimately parking their camper for good in Johnson, VT, spending their summers in Johnson and the remainder of the year in Windsor.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 16th at 10:00am at the Norwich University Cemetery in Northfield, VT, followed by light refreshments at the Montpelier VFW.
