NORTHFIELD - Eugene Premont passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, following a decline in health. He was eight days away from his 90th birthday.
Eugene spent most of his life in Northfield, where he was cared for by his brother, Donat Sr., and Donat’s wife, Patricia, along with his nieces, Linda and Brenda, and his nephew, Donat Jr. After Donat Sr. passed away and Patricia's health declined, Eugene continued to reside in Northfield with Mary McGrath who, together with his sister-in-law Pat, cared for him until Pat’s passing. Eugene knew the family well and continued to receive excellent care. Mary, Lora Gaudreault, and Barb Comstock became extended family to Eugene, helping him remain connected to his hometown, where he was a well-known member of the community.
Eugene particularly enjoyed cycling around town, pausing to initiate conversations with people he encountered and collecting empty bottles and cans in his wagon. He also volunteered at the Northfield clothing shelf & the food shelf, assisting people in finding the items they needed. Eugene formed many friendships during his outings around town. He gained broader recognition after being featured on the Darn Tough Facebook page while pulling his wagon filled with bottles. Placemats featuring a map of the town and a symbol depicting Eugene walking with his wagon were also used at local establishments.
Later in life, Eugene enjoyed riding around Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine with Mary McGrath and Barb Comstock, sampling lunches at destinations as far north as the East Side and Cow Palace in Newport and Derby, Vermont; as far west as Al's French Fries in Burlington; and as far south as Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he enjoyed seafood at the Weathervane restaurant.
Eugene loved spending time with his many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. He especially enjoyed the most recent Thanksgiving gathering at "Jr" and Heather's, surrounded by family. He smiled broadly and spoke softly, keeping a watchful eye on Mary. He was most at peace when she was in his line of vision.
A celebration of life will be held 10/25/2026 at the Legion in Northfield from 1-4pm. His burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery with a private committal ceremony on 10/31/2026.
