Obituary

Everett William Stebbins of Burlington passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025. He was born in Montpelier, Vermont on June 18, 1935 to William A. and Dora (Fletcher) Stebbins. They moved to Burlington in 1946.

He married Sylvia Barr on July 16, 1960 at St. Paul's Church in Burlington. Everett and Sylvia had been best friends since fifth grade.

Everett was a loving and devoted husband and father. He loved the outdoors—especially flying, hunting and boating. He had a knack for all things mechanical and electrical.

Everett enlisted in the Army from Burlington High School in 1952, serving in an air defense artillery battery in Baltimore, Maryland. After returning to Vermont he joined the Army National Guard, completed Officer Candidate School and flight training, and served in the Guard until 1985 when he retired as a Master Army Aviator. Flying brought him great joy. He served as a long time Chittenden County Sheriff's Deputy and a member of the Shelburne Police Department, ending his working years at the Burlington Electric Department. He retired in 1997. He served in the Vermont State Guard after retirement.

A life member of the United States Sail and Power Squadron he served in many capacities at the local and national levels. He spent several years doing boating safety inspections locally.

In retirement, Everett and Sylvia enjoyed traveling with friends and taking cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal and several islands. They enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Everett is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son Steven and wife Catherine; his daughter Diana and daughter Carol and her husband Marc Jones; grandchildren Peter, Maria, and Andrew Stebbins; Delilah, Dave, Abby, and Theo Necrason, William Jones and Mary (Jones) Ritchie and her husband David and their children Caden, Maki, Colin, Zoey, and Eliza. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Allen (Judy) and Norman (Barbara).

A sincere thank you to the staff of Baird 3 and C floor wing of Birchwood Terrace for their excellent care and the compassionate engagement of UVM Home Health and Hospice.

His funeral is at 2 PM, June 21 at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. Inurnrment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington at 12:30 on June 20th.
