Obituary

Glenn Button, 88, of Burlington, Vermont, passed away on February 8th, 2025.

He was born on May 4, 1936, to Glenn Button Sr. and Margaret Ross Button. Glenn grew up in South Barre, Vermont, and graduated from Spaulding High School as the class president of the Class of 1954.

Following high school, Glenn moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he attended the Massachusetts Radio TV and Electronics School. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Benning and Fort Huachuca.

After his military service, Glenn lived in Syracuse, New York, for a short time, working for General Electric before returning to Vermont to be closer to his beloved family and to begin a career at IBM. Over a 30-year career at IBM, Glenn held various management positions, ultimately retiring as the off-shift plant manager. He deeply valued his time at IBM, particularly the friendships he built with his coworkers.

Glenn had a lifelong passion for sports. In high school, he played varsity football and baseball, and during his time in Syracuse, he played semi-professional baseball as a second baseman for the Syracuse Stars. He was also an avid skier and golfer, participating in the IBM golf league and IBM hockey team. His love for skiing began in childhood, skiing down the hill in his backyard, and continued throughout his life, sharing the sport with friends, his daughter, and his grandchildren.

A dedicated fan of Boston sports teams, Glenn cheered for the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. However, his greatest sports devotion was to The Ohio State Buckeyes football team. He never missed a game, kept up with team news through the Columbus Dispatch publication, and took many trips to Columbus, Ohio, to attend games with his son, daughter, and wife. He was thrilled to see the Buckeyes win the national title just a few weeks ago.

Above all else, Glenn was a devoted family man. He cherished the many trips he took with his family across the country. He married Cynthia Brooks on July 20, 1963, and together they built a loving home. He cared deeply for his son, Jon, and his daughter, Laura, and his immense love for his grandchildren, Eric, Elise, and Camryn, was unmatched. He took great joy in teaching them how to ski, play ball, fish, and golf, and he especially loved playing cards with them. He was the best "Papa" in the world.

Glenn also had a special bond with his brother, Phil. From childhood, they shared an enormous amount of fun together, remaining close throughout their lives and making daily phone calls to each other.

Glenn will be remembered as a charismatic, loving, and devoted family man. He was an extremely hard worker, always willing to help others, and had a great sense of humor, often sharing jokes and stories at holiday gatherings. He lived an outstanding life—one to be admired and one that served as an example of how to live with kindness, generosity, and joy.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Cynthia Brooks Button of Burlington; his son, Jon Button of Burlington; his daughter, Laura Button Benner of South Burlington; his grandchildren, Eric Benner and Camryn Benner of South Burlington; and his brother, Phil Button of The Gardens in Williamstown, Vermont. He was predeceased by his father, Glenn Button Sr.; his mother, Margaret Ross Button; and his granddaughter, Elise Brooke Benner.

There will be a wake from 2-4pm on February 17th at Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home at 9 Pleasant Street, Essex Junction, VT and a private family burial at Resurrection Park the following day.
