Obituary

Henriette Marie Gelinas Crowley passed into her eternal life with God on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Henri died soon after an unexpected diagnosis of advanced cancer.

She passed away peacefully in the care of the McClure-Miller Respite House surrounded by her loving family. Henriette lived her life as a sacrament of the steadfast love of God. In so many concrete ways, as a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, and a friend, Henriette has been a courageous, faithful, and joyful expression of how to trust God and how to love like Jesus and Mary do.

Henriette was born in 1937 in Burlington, Vermont to Leonard and Delphine Gelinas, a young immigrant couple who made a home on Conger Avenue, in the Lakeside neighborhood of Burlington. She attended St. Anthony School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1955. She married Air Force Sergeant John Crowley in 1957, giving birth to and raising seven children in nine years, through four major moves between air bases, including Massachusetts, Colorado, Labrador, and South Dakota. Henriette formed her family in a grateful, growing faith in God and God's Church. When the world around her in the sixties was convulsing in painful change, Henriette guided her family in prayerful trust in God's Justice and commitment to our shared calling to be People of God. Henriette served the church as a catechist, a fundraiser for Catholic schools, and a member of charitable fellowships such as the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1970 she was recognized for Meritorious Service to religious education by the Air Force Chief of Chaplains.

Henriette is survived by her former husband John, seven children, Alan John of Burlington. Gary Paul (Judy) of Colchester, Raymond Henry (Deborah) of Milton, Peter Roger (Maryann) of St.Albans, Duane Martin (Dianne) of Greenville, South Carolina, Celeste Roseanne of Burlington, and Margaret Madeleine Crowley O'Brien (Ned) of Burlington. She also sends forth fourteen grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren, and is fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends from Allard Square, 101 College, and the Elks Monday Night Bingo. Henriette is predeceased by her parents and six siblings, Monica, Lorraine, Irene, Roger, Peter, and Madeleine.
