Irene R. Fleury, 71, of South Burlington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2026, following a short illness.
Born in Burlington, Vermont, on April 4, 1955, she was the cherished daughter of the late John B. and Rita L. (LeClair) Fleury. Irene was a proud graduate of the Burlington High School Class of 1973.
Irene walked through life with a vibrant independence. Though she was never married, her heart and life were full, centered deeply around her family. She was an avid crocheter and crafter, famously known for handmaking special annual holiday ornaments for family and friends. Countless babies and loved ones were kept warm by her beautifully handcrafted blankets, a project she always had close at hand. As the dedicated family historian, Irene held a treasure trove of stories, keeping her family's heritage alive through her storytelling. To her nieces and nephews, she was a fun, loyal aunt who never missed a holiday or a birthday.
Throughout her career, Irene worked as a bookkeeper for Howard Bank, TD Bank, Property Management Associates, the State of Vermont, and Smith Bell & Thompson. She was a former parishioner of Saint Mark's Church in Burlington and most recently a faithful member of Saint John Vianney Church in South Burlington.
Irene is survived by her sister, Diane F. Murtagh; her brother, Bernard J. Fleury and his wife, Sheryl; her beloved nieces and nephews, Marjorie Trombly and her husband John, Carol Beaudin and her husband Dennis, Joayn Morway, and John Fleury and his wife Brianna; as well as her adored grandnieces and grand nephews, Michael Trombly, Danielle Trombly, Rebecca Anderson, Anthony Stupik and his wife Hannah, Riley John Anderson, Claire Noelle Anderson, Jane Joayn Fleury, Caleb Morway, Jaxon Morway, and Travis David Stupik.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Rita Fleury; her brother-in-law, David Murtagh; and many dear aunts and uncles.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM at New Mount Calvary Cemetery, Plattsburgh Avenue, Burlington.
