Jackamo
Baroffio
Oct 27, 1934 — Aug 10, 2024
Jackamo "Jack" Baroffio passed away on August 10, 2024 at the age of 89. He was born in Barre, the only child of Ugo V. Baroffio and Viola (Hanscomb) Baroffio. As a child he lived in Montpelier, and moved to Northfield when his parents purchased a garage on North Main Street in 1945. He attended Northfield schools and graduated from Northfield High School in 1952 as the top male student in his class. After graduation he went into business with his father at Baroffio's Garage and purchased the business in 1986.
As a young boy he was very active in scouting and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. In the early 60's with his wife Thelma and local dentist Dr. Len Friedman, he re-established the Cub Scout program in Northfield that had been inactive for years.
In high school he participated in basketball, rifle, soccer, music and drama. As a star basketball player in his senior year he met the love of his life, a sophomore cheerleader named Thelma Abbott, who after six years of dating became his wife in 1957. In his senior year he joined the Army Reserves 344th Truck Transportation Unit where he served for eight years.
Shortly after marrying, he and his wife built two dog kennels - one for boarding and one for breeding German Shepherds. They raised puppies for 30 years, selling all over the US, Canada and one to Africa. They boarded dogs and cats for 40 years. Jack loved obedience training and ran many classes. Competing in AKC trials around New England, he finished a male Shepherd he owned to its AKC championship. Jack was fond of saying he got into the dog business so Thelma could stay home and raise their five children. He was extremely proud of his children and followed all their games and activities at home or away. They spent many hours hunting and fishing together. Special times were spent at the family camp on Lake Champlain.
In the early 70's when his oldest son joined the Rifle team he became assistant coach for Bob Bradley and took over when Bob left. For the next 40 years he coached hundreds of young shooters to be, first of all, safe gun handlers. During those years he was so proud to coach all five of his children, with three of them becoming State Champions. He also coached two female shooters to National Championships, and many who received college scholarships based on their shooting ability. He loved coaching kids and considered it his hobby. He and his wife traveled to many different states with his teams, participating in National Championships. A proud finish to his coaching career was being featured on WCAX news program "Super Seniors" in 2022.
Jack also had served as a Village Trustee and was a 40 year member of the Northfield Fire Department. He was also a long time member of the VT Towing Association. He was a lifetime member of the United Church of Northfield.
After retirement, he became active in The Northfield Senior Center, delivering Meals on Wheels with his wife Thelma, organized and ran Bingo and spaghetti suppers as fund raisers for the Center.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, his son Bruce (Penny) and their children; Viki (Chris) Delmas, Lisa (Steve) Vallee and Bruce Jr. (Cailyn); Son Dean, daughter Jeri (Richard) Harvey and their children; Darin (Christina) Harvey, Garret (Kayla) Harvey; son Joe (Laurie) and their children Micaila and Casey (Olivia) Baroffio; Son Rico (Duane) Baroffio. He leaves 12 great grandchildren, Danny and Taylor Baroffio, Brody and Braelyn Delmas, Zander and Beth Vallee, Lucas, Ariana, Grayson, Gavin, Kora, and Griffen Harvey.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 11:00am at the United Church in Northfield. All are welcome to attend. Arrangements are in the care of Kingston Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Northfield Jr. Rifle Club, 587 North Main Street Northfield VT 05663, or to the Northfield Senior Center, 168 Wall Street, Northfield VT 05663.
