Jean
Weir
Nov 18, 1934 — Jun 6, 2024
Weir - Jean McCullough, age 89, of New York, New York passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024.
Jean was born in Great Neck, New York to Frank McCullough and Hazeltine Dempsey. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter F. Weir, Esq. in 2019. Jean was Prom Queen at Great Neck High School and went on to graduate from Radcliffe College. For several years after college Jean worked as a copy editor at Time Life Inc. until she had her two children, when she opted to become a homemaker. She volunteered for Grosvenor House Thrift Store for many years and was a long-standing supporter of The Met and NY Philharmonic.
Jean was an active member of her summer community in Point O' Woods, Fire Island, NY, sitting on the Historical Society and Real Estate committees for several years, actively participating in the Junior Team Tennis tournament responsibilities throughout the 80s, singing in the church choir for many decades, and participating in community theatre. Jean spent the past several years residing at The 80th Street Residence in her neighborhood of the past 50 years on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she flourished and was loved by all. As her dementia progressed she was able to "let go" and explored her creativity which was lovely to see! Many thanks to 80th Street for their incredible care.
More recently Jean's decline precipitated a move to The Arbors in Shelburne VT, where Peter spent his final years. Many staff knew and remembered Jean so she was surrounded by familiar friendly faces as well as her family in her last months.
Jean is survived by her two children, Bradford Weir and Elizabeth Weir, granddaughter Matilda Kauffman, and niece Leslie McCullough Jeffries.
An intimate service will be planned for the Fall at St. James' Church in NYC.
