Obituary

John D. Hardacre of Underhill, Vermont passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, following a 21 month battle with brain cancer.

He was a lifelong Vermonter, raised in Winooski, the son of Harry and Violet Hardacre. He was a loving husband to his wife Marilyn and proud father to his children Jason and Kate. He built a life rich in love, joy, learning, work, and adventure.

He was a graduate of Saint Michael's College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business, which was the foundation for his working career, supplemented by his graduation from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and several computer programming classes and additional business courses. During his time at Saint Michael's, he spent a couple of summers working for the college's electrical crew, which fostered a lifelong interest in learning and performing electrical, automotive, and carpentry work for family and friends.

John spent over 40 years working in the banking industry. He began his career at Chittenden Bank in corporate finance and then held several operations positions including management of the loan accounting department, bank acquisition planning and conversions, and was also involved in establishing the first Information Technology vendor relationship for the Bank which later led him to work in that field. His IT career started with Systematics, Inc. and included Alltel Corporation, and then subsequently Fidelity Information Services, where he worked remotely for many years. He was fulfilled by his work, contributed greatly, and had many wonderful colleagues that he worked collaboratively with to produce excellent, accurate, and timely work.

John was a warm, kind, and humble man who was devoted to his family and made his part of the world a better place. He valued accuracy and believed that details matter; he led by example and always looked for the good in people and situations. In all things, he was a self-starter who was solutions oriented. He enjoyed doing handyman projects and was always willing to pass along his large bounty of knowledge of all things building, fixing, and safety. He also enjoyed the outdoors, in any kind of weather, particularly enjoying the mountains at home and afar, and the wildlife, which included frequent visits by deer, fox, rabbits, a woodchuck, and occasional eagles and bears.

John was always happiest when his family was together, working on a project, celebrating a graduation, traveling and exploring somewhere new, enjoying a meal, discussing current events, watching the wildlife or simply spending time together. John was always kind, very smart and wise, treated everyone with respect and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, his son Jason and his fiancé Megan Loiselle of South Burlington, Vermont, his daughter Kate and her partner Kyle Simanskas of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and his brother-in-law James Olmstead and his wife Terri of Columbus, Indiana.

His family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Alissa Thomas, as well as the UVM Home Health and Hospice team, most especially nurses Sandra Harms and James Lansing, and to the staff at the McClure Miller Respite House where he spent his final three days.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026 from 4pm to 6pm at LaVigne Funeral & Cremation Service, 132 Main Street, Winooski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 11:00am at St. Thomas Church in Underhill, with burial to follow at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.
