John Phillip
Kinghorn
Mar 29, 1951 — Jun 14, 2026
John Phillip "Sam" Kinghorn, 75, of Essex, Vermont, died at his home on June 14, 2026.
Born March 29, 1951, in Morristown, New Jersey, Sam was the son of John Henry and Mary Kinghorn (née Crane). While his early childhood was spent in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, Sam spent the vast majority of his life living in Vermont in Cornwall, Burlington, and finally for over 43 years in Essex.
Sam was a devoted writer who journaled daily for most of his adult life. His passion for craftsmanship, history, and hospitality was evident in the beautiful, unique home that he and Fran curated to share with many friends and family. Whether around a cozy fireplace or a warmly lit porch, guests frequently enjoyed hearing Sam reminisce and tell stories of his past. Sam was generous, kindhearted, and empathetic to all creatures, great and small.
Sam is survived by his wife, Frances Kinghorn (née Alster), daughter and son-in-law, Zack and Emily Clark of Burlington, and his son, John Maxfield Kinghorn, of Williamsburg, Virginia. His grandchildren, Fox and Luna Clark, affectionately called him "Bumpa". Sam also leaves behind his best friend, Tim "Chico" Taylor, of South Burlington, nine nieces and nephews, as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Sam was predeceased by his parents and sister, Mary Virginia "Ginger" Work, and her husband Bertram Work.
