Obituary

John Gilbert Maloney (10/8/1935) of West Berlin passed away on his own terms on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. John was born to Floyd and Freda (Wheeler/Riley) Maloney at their home on Glinnis Rd in West Berlin, VT. He was raised and worked on the family farm, attended a one room schoolhouse just up Cox Brook Rd from their home, and graduated from Northfield High School in 1953. He then attended and graduated from the Vermont State School of Agriculture a year later. He also joined the National Guard in 1952 and proudly served for 10 years as a medic.

On October 21, 1956 he married Deanna MacDougall and moved into their home that he built with the help of Deanna's Uncle Alden, using wood harvested from the farm. They welcomed two children Christopher and Susanne.

He later purchased the family farm, doubled the size of the operation, and raised Holstein dairy cows until he retired in the early 2000s. Always a hardworking man, he also created an excavating and snow plowing business which he ran for many years and eventually sold to his longtime employee and friend Larry Holub. The farm was sold to an enterprising young couple and became Glinnis Hill Farm, an organic vegetable farm with produce currently available at local farmers markets.

John served his community by being a selectman for the Town of Berlin for many years, like his father, along with being head of the VT Dairy Council. He was a Mason for over 60 years and Past Master of the Dewitt-Clinton Lodge #15 in Northfield, as well as a member of the Shriners.

He also has two other children, Sean Maloney and Scott Seckington. He is survived by his children, his grandson Liam Weldon, his sisters Elizabeth Powers and Kathryn Youngerman, sisters-in-law Lorna Maloney and Gloria Maloney, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers William and Robert, and his half-sister Ruth Riley.

Services will be private as the family and close loved ones will put him to rest at a private graveside ceremony in the fall, his favorite season. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Information on giving can be obtained at lovetotherescue.org.
