John Charles Read, 94, of Essex Junction, Vermont, passed away on February 9, 2025.
Charlie was born in Niagara Falls, New York on February 22, 1930, to Loretto (McCall) and Charles Burgess Read. After attending parochial school, he matriculated at the
College of the Holy Cross, where he earned his A.B. He went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Buffalo. In 1955 he married Patricia O'Neill. Soon thereafter Charlie
joined the Air Force, in which he served for two years. After separating from the military Charlie returned to Western New York, where he practiced family medicine, and later, took a residency in pathology. For most of his career, he practiced pathology at Mt. Saint Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, New York, where he rose to Director of Laboratories. He also worked part-time as a pathologist for Niagara County. Charlie retired after 40 years of medical practice and relocated to Vermont. Feeling he had more to give, Charlie worked part time as a pathologist for several years with Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington and Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Charlie loved dogs, reading, and growing vegetables. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Patricia; his children Mary Catherine, Robert, Philip, Helen, and Jim; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charlie was preceded in death by his sisters Elizabeth, Helen, Anne, and Sheila.
