Katharine
Greenewalt
Aug 4, 1928 — Dec 16, 2023
On December 15, 2023, Katharine Greenewalt died peacefully at her home in Stowe, Vermont, surrounded by caring friends and beloved felines. Katharine was born on August 4, 1928, and celebrated her most recent 95th birthday with balloons, cake, and lobster!
Katharine lived life on her own terms. Her passion for animals, domestic and wild, remained consistent and even grew over the years. While she often would sport leopard spotted fashion, and truly loved the great beings that could be found on a safari, her heart belonged to her many pets -- dogs and cats -- who shared her life. Those who have known Katherine for years might remember the incredible journey that one of her dogs took, feared surely to be lost for life, only to return home. And, as for cat adventures, the development and building of their outdoor enclosed habitat indeed must have earned Katharine some kind of esteemed 'cat lady' award!
Her animal world aside, Katharine was a true Stowe legend. She was well loved and will be remembered for her spirit and character. She cherished Vermont and the historical aspects of her beloved town. For decades, she skied the slopes of Mount Mansfield, and well beyond, with impressive style. Where there was a gathering for the day or apres-ski you could find her raising a glass or twirling bread in the cheesy fondue pot. When summertime brought on the warmer days, there she would be in her stylish outfit with her tennis racket ready to swing. Even throughout the last years of her life, Katharine continued to watch and enjoy professional tennis matches regularly on her big screen television. And fond memories of Katharine behind the wheel of a very sporty sports car will be cherished by a select few.
While Katherine's interests often included those living and breathing, for her, art was doing the same. She was exceptionally knowledgeable regarding a broad spectrum of art forms. Her appreciation for unique paintings, sculptures, and other pieces of visual art was immense. Katharine had no fear of independence, exploration and/or idiosyncrasy and she took pride in representing this through her art collection.
Katharine lived a long and full life. In no uncertain terms, she decided to age in place and live her life out in her home. With dignity, she did just that with the support of dedicated friends and caregivers, and of course, her cats. She was most grateful to all!
There will be a celebration of Katharine Greenewalt's life on Saturday January 13th, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Stowe Community Church. Please consider a donation in her memory and honor to an animal welfare organization of choice.
