Obituary

Kathryn Ann (Kohinke) Ellenberger, 80, passed away on January 5, 2024, at her home in Essex Junction, Vermont. Born on July 18, 1943, in Oneonta, NY, she grew up in the Central New York region as the eldest of nine children. After graduating from Auburn Community College she worked at IBM for 13 years as a secretary, first in Endicott, NY, where she met her husband, Andrew, then in Burlington, VT, before dedicating her life to caring for her home and family. Her life work was to care for others and she showered kindness, patience, and generosity on many. Kathy enjoyed visiting family, spending time on Lake Champlain, playing scrabble, reading, taking care of her cats and dogs, and cooking and baking for others. Her warm, friendly smile will be missed. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Essex Jct., VT. Kathy is survived by her daughters Cynthia Ellenberger of Essex Jct., VT, and Carolyn Ellenberger of Essex, VT; brothers Edward (Anne) Kohinke of Roanoke County, VA, and Stephen Kohinke of Albany, NY; sister Dorothy (Andrew) Pierce of Whitney Point, NY; sisters-in-law Anne (Masa) Hayashi of San Jose, CA, and Patsye Kohinke of Lynchburg, VA; brother-in-law David Washburn of Westerville, OH; and many extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband Andrew Ellenberger; parents Reverend Theodore and Marion (Howard) Kohinke; brothers Clayton Kohinke and Theodore (Diane) Kohinke; sisters Carol Kohinke, Deborah (Gary) Taylor, and Marilyn Washburn; and many beloved pets. The family thanks the UVM Medical Center and UVM Home Health and Hospice for their care of Kathy following her recent cancer diagnosis. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
