Leo J.
Duncan
Aug 17, 1938 — May 1, 2026
Leo J. Duncan passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026. Born on August 17, 1938, he was the third of seven children born to William and Theresa (McHugh) Duncan.
He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1956 and worked at Shearer Chevrolet. After graduation, he worked for his father-in-law at Mike Corey's Gulf station. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Carol Corey on May 30, 1959. She predeceased him on August 7, 2007.
Leo purchased the service station in March, 1976 and moved to a new location on the corner of St. Paul and Kilburn Streets in February, 1979. He renamed the business Duncan's Auto Service and designed a new logo to add to the corner sign. He was well respected in his business, and his customers loved him. He was most proud of having his son working side by side with him. He retired in 1999 after over 40 years in business.
After he sold the business, he worked at Pete's RV Center until March, 2020. He served with the VT Army National Guard for 18 years. Leo was an avid Red Sox fan, never missing a televised game, and was able to go to Fenway Park a few times. He wore his Red Sox coats proudly. He was also a former member of the Ethan Allen Club, the Elks Lodge, and the Loyal Order of Moose.
Leo and Carol loved to socialize and enjoyed their frequent weekends in Montreal. He especially loved the casino. He also enjoyed scratch tickets and bought them wherever they were sold, always hoping he would hit that jackpot.
He loved his family, and even though he wasn't a big talker at family gatherings, he loved seeing everyone together and listening to all our stories.
He is survived by his children, Cindy (Bill) Boardman, Lynn (Joel) Kynoch, Michael (Sonja) Duncan; his grandchildren, Meghan (Kyle) Smith, Corey Boardman, Shannon (Eric) Bolhardt, Tim (Maeghan) Kynoch, Ashley (Anthony) Aubin, Courtney (Dustin) O'Brien; great-grandchildren, Owen and Olivia Smith, Eleanor Bolhardt, and Hunter, Quintin, and Jade O'Brien. He was known as "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved him deeply.
He is also survived by his sister Mary (Herb) Brown; his brothers, Tom Duncan, and Bernard (Kathy) Duncan; his in-laws, Heidi Duncan, Diane Sullivan, Jack and Nancy Chalmers; and by several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, William, Gerald, and John Duncan; his sister-in-law Susan Duncan, and brother-in-law Bud Sullivan.
Special thanks to the staff at Vergennes Grand Senior Living and to UVM Medical Center for the care they gave to our dad and the support to his family.
