Obituary

NORTHFIELD-Lucille Hebert, affectionately known as Mémère by her granddaughters and great-grandson, passed away with her family on October 27, 2026, her 95th birthday. We were so blessed to have 95 incredible years with Lucille. She was sharp, funny, kind, generous, caring, and a bit wild - throughout all those years, until her last day. We were fortunate to talk with Lucille about her wishes for her obituary, funeral, and burial. We are grateful to honor her by carrying out those wishes. We have tried to keep as much of this obituary as possible in her own words.

During our conversation about her obituary, she told her granddaughter Michelle, “Keep quiet; I’m going to throw something at you.” Michelle’s reaction was likely a mix of surprise, pride, and amusement at how openly Mémère wanted everyone to know how much she loved men. But her love for people extended far beyond that. She especially loved helping children with French in school; feeding children for 10 years at Northfield Elementary School and seeing them grow up, get married, and become her friends; and volunteering at the Northfield Senior Center. She said, “Especially the men, they loved it when I served them. I was like a waitress, and I loved it. The men loved it.” She also loved being called on once to help the police translate for a French-speaking individual who had been arrested; helping with Boy Scouts of America and troop duties, making sure the boys looked good and wore their uniforms correctly; and learning to swim at 40 years old and never giving up. Most of all, she loved people: her friends in Northfield, whom she loved deeply; her family in Canada; her husband Marcel, who she wanted everyone to know “was wonderful to her, taught her English when she came to Vermont speaking only French from Canada, and that Marcel took care of her and protected her”; Bill, her second husband, and took her to Florida for years which she loved; her great-grandson Andrew (“little Andrew”), whose toes she always wanted to “touch”; her granddaughters Jennifer and Michelle; her son, big Andrew, whom she loved and was so proud of and who passed away too young; and her daughter Lorraine, who was by her side until her last breath.

Lucille was bilingual and spoke French fluently. Although she left Canada at 16, she remained closely connected to her family, speaking with them by phone in French. She was one of 16 children. She particularly loved her mother, whom she described as an “amazing and smart woman” who would “make her own medicine” to keep her family healthy.

Lucille was uniquely generous with her time, money, love, and acceptance of others. She was a Democratic Catholic who actively volunteered for the Vermont Democratic Party in Montpelier and donated to the Democratic National Committee. She also donated to the Northfield Senior Center; American Legion in Northfield, where she was a member for 60 years; the AIDS Healthcare Foundation; and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She believed in science, medicine, God, honesty, love, and peace. Pope Francis once said, “Who am I to judge?” - and she truly lived that way. Love, forgiveness, acceptance, and trust allowed her to build meaningful relationships effortlessly and with enviable grace. She was one of a kind and is missed tremendously. We love you forever and ever, Mémère. Je t’aime.
