Martin
Lefebvre
Apr 11, 1953 — Sep 30, 2024
Jerry was born in 1953 as the fifth and final child of Matthew A. and Mary C Lefebvre. Jerry was born into a large and close family. Most of his siblings worked, lived and played right in Northfield. Being the 4th son and the youngest, Jerry decided at a fairly young age that he was not all that interested in being part of the family Chevrolet Dealership. Jerry had a passion for food which was quite evident in his high school days as he took a less traditional route attending Spaulding tech for their culinary program.
After graduating high school Jerry worked at The Lodge in Stowe. Through his work at The Lodge, he was selected by the Vermont Chef's Association for an opportunity to go to live and work in Switzerland. There, he trained to become a chef and to master the art of hospitality, which the Swiss are well known for. During his eight year tenure in Switzerland he learned how to speak the unwritten language of Swiss German which he was fluent in by the time he left. Some of the cities he was in, included Lucerne, Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Interlakken, and Zermatt. At the end of his years in Switzerland he was approved for his application for Swiss citizenship, which is not an easy thing to do. After mastering his culinary skills in a number of kitchens around Switzerland, he decided it was time to come home to show all that he learned- however he did NOT want to work in another kitchen that wasn't his.
After seeing an ad in the Burlington Free Press for a food truck for sale, on June 28th 1984, (national food truck day) Jerry bought his original "Rocket Js" food truck. After a few weeks of serving at the Waterbury softball tournaments, one weekend a tournament was canceled, and needing to sell his inventory he approached his brothers at Bean Chevrolet in Northfield to see if they would let him set up for the weekend. They obliged and he opened Friday night at 6pm, with no advance notice, he just did it…. And the rest is history.
Rocket J's was more than just a food truck. It was a hangout, a place to meet up, and a place to get a bite to eat. Over the years it became the heart and soul of the Northfield community. How could we ever write an obituary about Rocket without mentioning Dollar-a-Dog? You knew that winter was done and that spring had sprung when you saw that Rocket J's neon sign, the rocket on top, and a line to the street.
Jerry was an incredible story teller and a true comedian. He knew how to light up a room and be the life of the party. Jerry took care of each and every one of his customers, paying attention to the smallest of details while making an effort to make all feel heard and special.
Prior to going to Switzerland, Jerry met his wife Gail working at The Lodge in Stowe, and in 1986, after returning to Vermont he met back up with her and eventually married her on January 12, 1990. Jerry and Gail have two sons Jeremiah and Joe. He leaves behind his wife Gail and their son Jeremiah his girlfriend Meagan and their two kids, and their son Joseph, his fiance Lauren and their two kids. He also leaves behind his sister Margaret (AKA Bonnie), his brother Matthew E and Cherie Lefebvre, his brother Mark C.Bean, he was pre-deceased by his brother Michael P Bean, his two Godsons Paul and Mark, his nieces and nephews, and an entire community of people that have known him dearly his whole life.
