Mary Jane King, affectionately known by her grandchildren as Nana, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 surrounded by her loving family at the McClure Miller Respite House.
Born in Burlington, Mary Jane lived a long, vibrant life centered around her family, her community, and her great love for travel. Throughout her 94 years, she brought warmth, wisdom, and comfort to everyone she met.
On November 27, 1952, she married the love of her life, Donald L. King. Together, they built a beautiful family, a lifetime of shared dreams, and shared an incredible spirit of adventure over their many years of marriage.
Nana was an explorer at heart who loved traveling the open road with Don. They were deeply active and cherished members of the Roadrunners camping group, sharing countless laughs, stories, and campfires with a wonderful community of fellow travelers. Among their favorite memories was an unforgettable trip touring the United States in an RV, ultimately making their way to Alaska. For many years, they also loved escaping the northern winters as snowbirds in Florida, soaking up the sun and enjoying the warmth. Whether embarking on a major cross-country journey or enjoying local weekend camp outs in Vermont State Parks, she was happiest surrounded by nature, good friends, and the family she loved most.
At home, Nana's kitchen was the heart of the family. Her family will deeply miss her incredible home-cooked meals, which always brought everyone together around the table. Cooking was one of the many ways she showered her family with love, and those gatherings will be cherished forever.
To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was simply Nana, a title she wore with immense pride. She was their biggest cheerleader, a source of endless love, and the heart of every family gathering. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit, her stories, and the love she gave so freely will live on in their hearts forever.
She is survived by her children, David King and his wife Cheryl, Bob King and his wife Barb, and Paula Draper and her husband Steve; her cherished grandchildren, Justin, Randy, Kelly, Becky, Nicole, Erin and Colin; her many beloved great-grandchildren; and a large, loving extended family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald King, and her cherished daughter, Dawn Hartigan.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Maple Ridge Memory Care for their care and support during her time there, as well as the staff at the McClure Miller Respite House for their compassionate, tender care in her final days.
A Catholic Mass to celebrate her life will be held at St. Mark Church in Burlington on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 10:00 am, with a committal at Lakeview Cemetery immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the UVM Health Network Home Health & Hospice (McClure Miller Respite House).
