Meredith Stukey
Mcgee
Sep 22, 1969 — Jul 12, 2026
Meredith Anne Stukey McGee, 56 of Morrisville Vermont passed away on July 12, 2026, surrounded by her family, following an epic battle with cancer that she fought with courage, tenacity, and humor.
Meredith (Mer, Merrie) was born in Midland, Texas on September 22nd, 1969, the first child of Sue and Art Stukey. The small family moved from Texas to New Jersey where her little sister was born in 1971, then briefly to Arlington Heights, Illinois, overseas to Iran, then settled down in Evanston, Illinois for the largest part of her growing up years.
After graduating from Evanston Township Highschool in 1987, Meredith studied at the University of Illinois Chicago Campus where she forged life-long friendships and was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology.
After briefly pursuing an apprenticeship in carpentry, Mer decided it was time to make a big move and headed across the country to stay with her Aunt Cosette and Uncle Ted and figure out her next steps in the summer of 1990. Her first job in Vermont was at The Stowe Mountain Company where she would meet her husband, James, who was working in the kitchen at the time. Mer and James were quickly joined at the heart, and married in 1992 in a beautiful small chapel in Post Mills, Vermont.
Mer worked at Copley Hospital as a Licensed Nursing Assistant while earning her Nursing Degree at Norwich University. Nursing degree in hand, Mer continued her career at Copley and would spend the next 30 years bringing her kindness, extreme competence, and sense of humor to patients recovering from surgery and everyone who had the good fortune to work with and know her.
Mer and James would go on to build a log home in the woods where they raised son Bobby (1997) and daughter Gracie (1998), along with many cats and dogs.
Mer's great loves in life were travel and food, with a healthy side of working up a good sweat and learning how strong and powerful her body could be. She received her Second Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo then shifted focus and taught Zumba in and around Morrisville. Every new community she entered brought more cherished friends into her life.
Mer would go on countless adventures around the country and around the world, hungry for new experiences, new foods to try, new stairs to climb...Chicago, New York, Seattle, Dublin, Maine, Scotland, Ireland, Paris, Lebanon, Miami, Chincoteague, New Orleans and more. Once home from her travels, she would do her best to learn how to replicate recipes at home for her lucky friends and family. She and James would travel to the ocean whenever they could get away, in more recent years in their own perfect little camper. Mer would set an alarm every morning to be sure she didn't miss the sunrise over the ocean.
Mer grew up at the Second Unitarian Church in Chicago, IL where she was a foundational part of a three-person youth group, and served as the babysitter for many years. Since moving to Vermont, Mer has found welcoming homes at the Puffer United Methodist Church in Morrisville and the Unitarian Church of Montpelier.
With a great love of books and reading, Mer and the kids took home the award from the Morrisville library for the most books checked out by any one family. Being such a regular, Mer shortly joined the Library Board, later serving as its chair.
Once Mer was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2021, she began writing detailed updates about her experiences which she shared with her various communities through an email newsletter. Anyone with the good fortune to be part of Mer's world could hear her strong, funny, practical, hopeful, both daunted and undaunted voice in every update and she knew there was a loving village rooting for her at every step.
If there was anything Mer loved as much as travel and good food, it was laughing with people she loved. She was hilarious – and her generous and explosive laugh brought everyone into the joke.
Mer is survived by her husband of 34 years, James, son Robert (Bobby), daughter Grace (Gracie), sister Elizabeth (Lizzie), sister-in-law Janet, niece Eleanor (Nora), mother Susan (Sue), uncle Ted, aunts Betty and Beverly, and cousins Maggie, Sharon, Chelsea, Justin, Brian, and Michael, along with countless other friends and extended family who have made her life rich with laughter and love.
She was predeceased by her beloved pop Arthur (Art), father-in-law William (Bill), mother-in-law Lois, brother-in-law Thomas (Tom), aunts Dorothy (Dottie) and Cosette, and uncle Forrest.
A remembrance of life will be held at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, 130 Main Street, in Montpelier, Vermont on Saturday August 8th at 2pm, with coffee and fellowship to follow.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Lamoille Area Cancer Network at lacnvt.org .
