Obituary

It is with a broken heart that I announce the passing of my husband and best friend Micheal D. Greenia (60), on April 1, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by love in his final moments with his wife, Cindy, close friends, and our dog Murphy by his side.

Micheal was born on March 26, 1966.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Cross-Greenia; his mother, Bev Greenia; his brother, Scott Greenia, and his wife Kristin, along with their children, Lex and Aubrey; and Andi O'Grady, a very special teen who entered our lives two years ago and quickly became "the kid we didn't think we wanted". He was predeceased by his father, Bob Greenia, as well as the many beloved pets who made up our family over the years.

Micheal graduated from Mount Mansfield Union High School in 1984. He joined the United States Navy and served from 1984 to 1988. He was proud of his military service and often spoke fondly of his time aboard the aircraft carriers. Following his return home, he worked at Maynard Auto and later at Clark's Truck Center.

Micheal liked making maple syrup, woodworking, house projects, and nature. He loved our cat, dogs, horses, donkeys, and birds. Most of all Micheal loved the fire service.

Micheal's lifelong commitment to the fire service began at the age of 15, when he joined the Underhill-Jericho Fire Department as a junior firefighter. He served his hometown department faithfully until 2015, when he relocated to central Vermont and joined the Williamstown Fire Department, where he remained an active member until his passing. Throughout his career, Micheal contributed to numerous volunteer organizations, serving on boards and committees. He was especially proud to serve as President of the Vermont State Firefighters Association, where he championed the needs of firefighters across the state. He was also a respected instructor and mentor, shaping the careers of countless firefighters.

In 2001, Micheal began his career with the State of Vermont as an Assistant State Fire Marshal. Through dedication and leadership, he rose to become the Public Education Section Chief for the Vermont Division of Fire Safety. Micheal was at his best when sharing his knowledge of fire science and safety—whether educating families at local fairs with fire safety trailers or presenting at national conferences. He approached every opportunity with passion, professionalism, and purpose.

Micheal was instrumental in the development and success of initiatives such as Fire Safe 802, the Northeast CO Alliance, Remember When, and Sound the Alarm. He is credited with helping to save countless lives through education and outreach.

Please join us for a memorial service with fire service honors on April 18, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Mount Mansfield Union High School, 211 Browns Trace Road, Jericho, Vermont. Donations in Micheal's memory may be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Micheal— your watch is over, but your legacy will live on.
