Obituary

Nancy Corwin Nichols Martin died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of April 15, 2025.

She was born to parents Frances Marion Corwin and Ellsworth Gordon Nichols on April 20, 1938 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. Nancy was the oldest of their four children, and she spent her childhood in Winchester and Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Nancy attended Beaver Country Day School, The Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, and Skidmore College, where she studied Interior Design. Throughout her young life, Nancy enjoyed her summers in Cataumet on Cape Cod with her siblings and cousins. Her refuge was at Eaglis in Manchester-by-the-Sea, where she was known to launch herself off the cliffs to dive into the sea.

As a young woman, Nancy moved to Vermont. While swimming in the Mad River with a group of friends, she met a handsome young man who was kayaking. Thomas Martin and Nancy were married on October 5, 1974 in Waitsfield, Vermont. They had 47 years together until his passing in 2021. Their marriage began with the managing of the Tucker Hill Lodge. It was here that they brought home their firstborn, Heidi, in 1976. Eleven months later they welcomed their second daughter, Laurie, in 1977. At this point, they had just moved into their 1850 farmhouse on Church Street in Hyde Park. It was here where they would spend the rest of their marriage together.

Their Hyde Park house was a true labor of love, and was a place they transformed together. Tom, with his architectural expertise, and Nancy with her sense of interior design in combination with her love of landscaping and gardening. She was happiest tending to her flowers, and would relish the emergence of her plants each spring. The house would never have been what it was without the shared sense of purpose and love for their home that Tom and "Nance" shared. As a young family, Tom and Nancy enjoyed supporting their girls through sports and education. Their backyard was filled with a well manicured lawn, family barbecues, and beautiful gardens maintained by Nancy.

Nancy worked for the Second Congregational Church in Hyde Park during her earlier years. Nancy was emotionally strong and solid, and had a great sense of humor. She could always rally. Her children could find her in a crowd or in the grocery store because of her full head of hair, which she was always trying to tame. Family trips included journeys to Manchester-by-the-Sea and Loon Mountain to gather with family. Her daughter Heidi deeply appreciates the value of education that her mom taught her, and Laurie cherishes memories of learning to knit and traveling with her mom out west.

Nancy was an avid sports fan, especially of her beloved Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Some from Massachusetts would say that she might have been the strongest fan of Red Sox Nation in the state of Vermont. She was known to always have a schedule in hand, so she could watch every game on TV. She could tell you who was scheduled to pitch, the team's batting order, even if a player was about to be traded.

Nancy loved becoming a grandmother. From the beginning with Kaitlyn, she was always wanting to get down on the ground and play with the kids. She would have everything they needed. The special plates for hosting her grandkids, the sandbox filled with toys, the best bedding that anyone would ever want to come home to. She was a Mom, a Granny, and much much more! Many July 4ths were spent enjoying a family barbecue and fireworks with their daughters and grandchildren at their home in Hyde Park. This was just one of many holidays and events she shared with her family, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, concerts, soccer games, softball games, and theater productions. Nancy and Tom always showed up, sharing their love and caring spirits.

She spent the last 3.5 years residing at the Mayo clinic in Northfield Vermont where she cherished her friendships with the ladies at lunch and the care she received there.

Nancy is survived by her daughters, Heidi Corwin Dembrosky and her husband, Bryant, of Chester Springs, PA, and Laurie Nichols Martin of Barre, Vermont; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Meghan Dembrosky, Xavier and Pi Woogmaster; her sister, Penny Lapham and her husband, Henry, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; her brother, Sandy Nichols of Spokane, Washington, and her brother-in-law, Slater Smith of Raleigh, North Carolina; in addition, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Frances Marion Corwin and Ellsworth Gordon Nichols, her husband, Thomas Felton Martin, and her sister, Suzy Smith.

Arrangements are with Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield, VT.

A celebration of life and interment will take place August 16th in Manchester-by-the- Sea, MA.
