Phyllis C
Chittenden
May 24, 1923 — Dec 18, 2014
PHYLLIS S. CHITTENDEN - WINOOSKI - Phyllis S. Chittenden, 91, of Winooski, also known as Mrs. C, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, in Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington. Phyllis was born in New York on May 24, 1923, to Muriel and Martin Stebbins. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1943, and married the love of her life, Eugene "Howard" Chittenden, on Feb. 12, 1950. They made their home in South Burlington where they farmed and worked in the family cider mill. Phyllis was a longtime member of the Champlain Valley Grange #400. She loved animals, and her pets brought much happiness to her. Phyllis enjoyed playing Bingo, cards, Yahtzee, and loved putting together puzzles and working on puzzle books. Phyllis loved music, and our favorite memories are of seeing her playing the piano or keyboard, hearing her yodel, or clapping her hands to her favorite songs. Phyllis was the greatest cook in the world; she could make an apple pie that would make your mouth water. Phyllis was notable for her baked pies, jams and other homemade treats that were sold in the family cider mill. Phyllis loved children and spent most of her life as a nanny for several families over the years. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Sharon and husband, Richard Niquette, of Burlington; daughter, Dianne and husband, Ervin Bessette, of Florida; son, John Chittenden of Essex; grandchildren, Gregory Niquette of Jeffersonville, Heather and husband, Frank Hutchins, of Cambridge, KayTee Niquette of Oklahoma, and Kevin O'Neill of New Hampshire; great-grandchildren, Chase and Skylar Hutchins of Cambridge; many step-grandchildren and their families; sister, Marilyn Wheelock of Williston; and brother, Randy Stebbins of Milton. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Howard Chittenden; stepson, William Chittenden; brothers, Rupert, Roger, and Ronald Stebbins; and sister, Arlene Lafountain. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Starr Farm for the care and kindness that they showed Phyllis. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m., with prayer services celebrating her life beginning at 7 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 132 Main St., Winooski. Online condolences can be shared with the family at www.lavignefuneralhome.com.
