Obituary

Priscilla Llynne Roberts Carpenter, 89, formerly of Burlington, passed away on June 5, 2026, unexpectedly at home in St. Albans, VT.

Priscilla was born on May 18, 1937, in Rutland, VT as the eldest daughter of Llewellyn Roberts and Louise Pierce Roberts. She was known as the "leader" by her five younger siblings, Prudence Roberts Westerberg, Polly Rowland Hood, John Llewellyn Roberts, Judy Roberts, and Jeanne Roberts Adams.

Born in Rutland and raised in Danville, Priscilla demonstrated early academic and athletic distinction, playing on the high school basketball team and graduating as valedictorian from Danville High School in 1955. She pursued higher education at the University of Vermont, where she completed her degree in Home Economics in 1959. Her undergraduate years were marked not only by scholarly commitment but by meaningful civic and social engagement. She was initiated into Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and, in recognition of her achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service, was inducted into Mortar Board, among the most prestigious honor societies in American higher education. From her earliest years, Priscilla set a standard of excellence that would define her throughout her life.

Priscilla was a proud and devoted Burlington resident whose roots in the city ran deep from her memorable days at UVM, her clinical training at the historic Mary Fletcher Hospital (currently the University of Vermont Medical Center) and raising her five children in the vibrant New North End of Burlington. Her dedication to her community was evident as a parent volunteer at C.P. Smith Elementary School, Lyman C. Hunt Middle School, and Burlington High School, where she supported student athletes as a proud sports booster. She was affectionately known as Mrs. C. to the friends of her children.

Priscilla earned her master's degree in nutrition from UVM and worked as a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Diabetes Educator whose career spanned decades of dedicated patient care across Vermont and New York. She began her clinical practice as a registered dietician at the Fanny Allen Hospital, where she established a strong foundation in medical nutrition therapy, before joining the University of Vermont Medical Center, where she played an integral role in the Optifast Program, a medically supervised weight management initiative. Her expertise in metabolic health and nutrition led her to Gifford Medical Center and Central Vermont Medical Center, where she became a trusted resource for patients navigating the complexities of dietary management and diabetes care. She also provided individualized nutritional support to residents of the Green Mountain Nursing Home, and extended her reach to Ticonderoga, New York, where she continued to equip patients through education and evidence-based nutrition therapy. Throughout her career, Priscilla was known for her advocacy on behalf of her patients, offering compassionate, individualized, patient-centered care informed by the latest advances in her field.

Throughout her life, Priscilla could be found researching and preparing recipes from scratch for her family. She was famous for her baked beans and apple pie which she gladly made for all occasions. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing and creating the wedding dresses for Allyson, Shelley, Llynne and Lindy. She was a gifted pianist playing for school events when she was in school and for her children. She could be found cheering from the sidelines for her grandchildren's extracurricular activities often joining her children for basketball, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, cross country running and skiing, theatre and dance recitals. The Vermont Marathon was a highlight of her year, where she showed up with tremendous enthusiasm to cheer on her beloved family of runners. She was a regular customer of Talbots and TJ Maxx and was always perfectly attired and put together for the occasion.

Priscilla is survived by her children and their spouses, all residing in Vermont: Allyson Carpenter Yandow and Chris Yandow of South Burlington, Shelley Carpenter Spillane and Chip Spillane of Shelburne, Llynne Carpenter Kiernan and Joseph Kiernan of Randolph, and John Carpenter and Melinda (Lindy) Delorme Carpenter of Fairfax; her 10 grandchildren that she was immensely proud, Meghan Yandow Durfee and Matthew Durfee, Sarah Yandow Williams and Brendan Williams, and Lauren Yandow, Tucker Spillane and Molly Spillane, Summer Spillane Marshall and Teddy Marshall and Kidder Spillane and Caitlin Spillane, Erin Kiernan and James Kiernan and Maddie Kiernan, Austen Carpenter and Chace Carpenter and Max Costas. She is survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Olivia and Anna Durfee, Winter Marshall, and Keelson Spillane. She knew of the imminent arrival of 3 more great-grandchildren, 2 boys and a girl, and was eager to meet them.

Additionally, her survivors include, her siblings, and many cousins, nieces and one nephew; and she was predeceased by her much loved and missed son, William (Billy) Hackett Carpenter, Jr.

A special thank you to the Visiting Angels who allowed Priscilla to stay in her home. She truly appreciated the care, and companionship provided to her.

Arrangements were in the care of Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Shelburne. A graveside service was held for the family at Lakeside Cemetery, where her son Billy is also buried.
