Richard Frederick
Terrien
Nov 8, 1941 — Sep 22, 2026
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Frederick Terrien, known lovingly as Dick, who entered eternal rest on September 22, 2026, at the UVM Palliative Care facility, with his devoted wife, Gail by his side. Born on November 8, 1941, at Fanny Allen Hospital in Colchester, Vermont, he was the cherished son of Frederick and Mildred (Gile) Terrien.
Dick's early years were spent in Essex Junction, where he graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1959. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, from 1959 to 1963. His journey of faith took him to St. John's Seminary in Boston, Massachusetts, where he deepened his commitment as a devout Catholic, embodying compassion, kindness, and a genuine concern for others. His most profound legacy is the way he lived his life: with unwavering faith and a heartfelt desire to help those in need.
For over 43 years, beginning June 20, 1983, Dick was an active and beloved member of the local recovery community, offering hope and support to countless individuals seeking a better life. He formed lasting friendships and uplifted the lives of many through his kindness and availability. Beyond his commitments to family and community, Dick was an avid harness racing enthusiast, a passionate fisherman, and a dedicated hunter. He found great joy in music, appreciating a wide range of artists, including Miles Davis, Bonnie Raitt, Louis Armstrong, Wynonna Judd, Dave Matthews, and Jack Johnson.
Dick's love extended beyond his immediate family; he was a frequent visitor to nursing homes across Vermont, bringing companionship and joy to those who might otherwise feel alone. A gifted storyteller, his tales brimmed with humor and warmth, creating cherished memories for those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Gail (Mills) Terrien; his dear sons, Richard Frederick (Jay) Terrien, Christopher Terrien (Melissa King), and Michael Terrien; his grandchildren, William and Matthew Terrien, who brought him immense joy; his sister, Betty Holton; and brother-in-law, Frank Mills. He also mourned the loss of his siblings; Joanne, Marilyn, Nancy, and Bobby.
His family invites all who knew and loved Dick to celebrate his life with them. To honor his legacy of kindness, service, and love, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 29 at 11:00 am at St. Mark's Catholic Church on North Avenue in Burlington. Immediately to follow will be a lunch gathering at the Elk's Club on North Avenue in Burlington.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital to continue Dick's tradition of generosity.
We will all miss you dearly, Dickie. Your legacy of faith, compassion, service, friendship, and love will live on in the hearts of all those you touched. Rest easy, knowing you will forever be celebrated and remembered by your family and friends.
Love, Gail, Jay, Chris and Mike
