Aug 2, 1935 — Mar 24, 2026
Robert A. Bryan of Essex, VT, passed away on March 24, 2026, at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT at the age of 90. He was born on August 2, 1935 in Montpelier, VT to Stuart R. Bryan and Hortensia Maria del Carmen Gomez Bryan. Bob was predeceased by his parents, his brother Stuart R. Bryan Jr., and his son-in-law Dale Caldwell.
Bob is survived by Clara his wife of 66 years, their children: Kevin (Deb), Kathleen Dirmaier (Jim), Kristine Caldwell, and Kimberly Bryan-Swartz (Troy). He was also the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his brother Richard Bryan (Dinah) and many Bryan and Gomez cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Bob graduated from St. Michael's High School in Montpelier, VT, and enlisted in the Navy where he was assigned to the destroyer, USS Fiske. His military service brought him to the Mediterranean Sea twice allowing him the opportunity to explore the surrounding countries. It was during his years in the Navy that he discovered a lifelong passion for boating and all things nautical. Following his tour of duty, Bob returned to higher education and went on to earn a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Commerce and Economics from the University of Vermont.
For the majority of his career, he was a loan manager for Commercial Credit, the Vermont Federal Bank and finally the Chittenden Bank until his retirement in 1997.
His life was rich with hobbies and interests that showcased his love for nature and creativity:
Bob was an avid hiker and camper, conquering all major peaks in Vermont, New York, New Hampshire and Maine. He and the family enjoyed many camping adventures in the Maritime provinces, Quebec as well closer to home in New England. He and Clara enjoyed rustic back-country canoe trips with friends to wilderness Quebec lakes.
He was in the process of upgrading his initial model railroad layout to a more elaborate – bigger and better design.
Bob also collected model British soldiers, proudly displaying roughly 250 pieces parading along the shelves of his library.
His talent for designing and building was evident in the many additions he created in the family home.
As a charter member of the Vermont chapter of the National Audubon Society, he demonstrated his love for birding and wildlife.
Bob was a member of the St. Pius X church in Essex as well as the Knights of Columbus.
Bob's ability to engage people in all walks of life made him a friend to many. His conversations were filled with warmth and genuine curiosity, leaving a lasting impression.
A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on April 6, 2026 at 10:00am at St. Pius X Church, located on Jericho Road, Essex VT. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Hospice Home Care and McClure Miller Respite House for their compassion and guidance. A graveside service will be held sometime in June at the discretion of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Bob's memory.
