Robert "Bob"
Decarreau
Sep 18, 1935 — Oct 2, 2026
Winooski, VT
Robert “Bob” Decarreau, a lifelong resident of Winooski, Vermont, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on September 18, 1935, to Leo and Jeanne (Marcotte) Decarreau, Bob spent his entire life deeply woven into the fabric of the community he loved.
Central to his lifelong presence in Winooski was his absolute devotion to his family. He shared a beautiful, inseparable life with his beloved wife of 67 years, Frances “Patsy” Decarreau, who passed away in February 2025. Patsy was the true love of his life, and the family they built together was the foundation of his happiness each and every day.
Alongside his deep commitment to his home life, Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves during the 1950s. He later built a dedicated career at the Burlington Free Press, retiring after 42 years of loyal service. For decades, he was also a familiar and enthusiastic fixture at Winooski High School sporting and school events, savoring every minute spent cheering on his children and grandchildren from the sidelines.
Bob’s quick wit, playful humor, and easy smile instantly put everyone at ease. He lived a life marked by generosity, quiet loyalty, and a ready set of hands—always willing to offer his time and talents to anyone who needed a project finished or a problem solved.
His family was the true heartbeat of his life. He is survived by his five children: Kathy/Deac Decarreau (Marcia Levine) of Winooski; Mike Decarreau (Jill Gaboriault) of Winooski; Jim Decarreau (Pam Guiness) of Cocoa Beach, FL; Peter Decarreau (Mike Sipple) of Billieres, France; and John Decarreau (Paula Gaboriault) of Acworth, GA.
Bob cherished the bustling, growing family he and Patsy built together. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren who were the absolute center of his world. Visiting with these younger generations, and sharing stories about them, brought him immense joy and pride. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ann Germain.
We, his family, would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Our Lady of Providence and the Bayada Hospice team for the heartfelt care they provided to our dad. We are also incredibly grateful to the residents at OLP and Bob’s longtime neighbors on Orchard Terrace for their years of steadfast friendship and encouragement. You all meant a great deal to Dad, and we are deeply thankful for your kindness.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Bob’s spirit of service in the exact way he lived: give your time and talents to help someone in your community. Take an afternoon, lend a hand, and serve others.
