Obituary

Roger Glover Nicholls, 84, of Morrisville, Vermont, passed away on April 26, 2026. Born on January 14, 1942, in Wethersfield, Connecticut, he was the son of Roger G. Nicholls Sr. and Elyse G. Nicholls.

Roger discovered the love of his life, Susan Gibb, in high school, beginning a partnership defined by deep and enduring devotion to one another, their family, and their faith. He graduated with honors from Pennsylvania Military College and served for decades with distinction as an officer in the U.S. Army. Achieving the rank of Major, Roger served in the Signal Corps, with assignments in Germany, Panama, and Vietnam. Following his active duty, he and his family settled in Bangor, Maine, where he and Susan began raising their family while he taught U.S. Military History at the University of Maine at Orono, all while earning his Master of Business Administration.

Following his military service, Roger transitioned to a career in business administration, dedicating more than three decades to the healthcare industry across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. During this time, he and Susan continued to raise their family and later delighted in welcoming their grandchildren, to whom he was known as "Pop-Pop," to Susan's "Nana."

In retirement, Roger and Susan moved to Vermont to be closer to their family. There, Roger became a pillar of the community and was instrumental in founding the Lamoille Community House, the region's first homeless shelter; a testament to his enduring commitment to serving others.

Roger and Susan shared a deep faith, and he was a devoted member of St. John's in the Mountains Episcopal Church in Stowe. He was also a voracious reader, a lover of good food & music, and a trivia enthusiast - passions that enriched his life and the lives of those around him.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Gibb Nicholls; his children, Joshua Nicholls and his spouse, Diane; his grandchildren, Kiernan and Riley Nicholls; and his sister, Meribeth Nicholls Flannagan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Annelise Nicholls Decelles.

Roger's legacy of service, both military and civic, and his unwavering devotion to his family and community will be remembered by all who knew him.

A memorial service will take place on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 2:00pm at St. John's in the Mountains Episcopal Church.
