Obituary

Ronald "Rand" Garbacz, 85, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 at Belleview Heights

Memory Care in Aurora, Colorado. He was born on November 20, 1938 in Summit, New

Jersey, the middle of three boys to George and Violet (Derbeck) Garbacz.

As a child, Rand was an avid animal lover (ducks Anthony and Cleopatra and his dog,

Charcoal), autograph collector, and a very proud Eagle Scout. In 1961 he received his B.S. in

Economics (highest honors) from Norwich University and in 1963 earned a M.B.A from

Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School where he concentrated in finance and strategy. He

subsequently received an Advanced Management degree from the University of Geneva,

Switzerland. Upon completion of his post graduate education Rand served several years as a

commissioned Army officer assigned to NSC Counter-Intelligence operations.

His civilian career began as a financial analyst at Cummins Engine, and subsequently

progressed to senior operating and strategic officer positions at Gould, Inc; Pullman, Inc; and

FMC Corporation. He participated in the founding and growing of several companies including

the K-2 Ski Company, a diversified sports equipment firm. In 1985, he joined Callard, Madden

& Associates, as the Managing Partner, to provide financial and strategic advisory services to

global corporations and institutions. Principal client successes were with Amcena, Varity

(Massey Ferguson), Thyssen-Bomemisza, Eaton, TRW, and Campbell Soup.

In the early 1990's, he combined with Braxton Associates, which in turn combined with Deloitte

Consulting to form a leading advisory presence in global advisory services. Notable consulting

engagements and relationships included Lockheed-Martin, Northrop-Grumman, Goodyear,

Fluor, Ingersoll-Rand, Dresser-Rand, Nestle, Southco, Berwind, Clark Security, First Financial/

First Data, Dial/Viad, YPF/Repsol, and EDS.

Upon retiring from Deloitte (as a Partner/Managing Director) Rand's focus shifted to teaching

and mentoring. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Strategy at the Daniels

Graduate School of Business at the University of Denver. In addition, he participated as a

lecturer with Dartmouth's (Tuck School) Executive Education program.

Rand had many accomplishments but the most profound was his gift of mentoring and making

a difference in young people's lives. For so many he was always there for guidance and

support, encouraging and empowering them to reach new heights and unlock their true

potential. His influence was life-changing and the positive impact he had on so many is his

most significant legacy.

Rand was a very hard worker but he also knew how to have a really good time! He loved to

travel, was an expert skier, enjoyed hiking the mountains of Colorado and white water rafting.

He flew gliders and sailed on sunny days. He loved to entertain and was the consummate host

making sure the wine flowed freely. His sense of humor was second to none.

His was a life fully lived, with grit, determination, perseverance, and love. His friends and

family will remember him as fearless, fierce, brilliant, and loyal.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years Alexandria Garbacz, son David Garbacz, daughter

Christina Garbacz, stepson Charles (Megan) Woolcott, grandchildren Ben Garbacz, Grace

Garbacz and Eloise Woolcott, and older brother Gerald (Jane) Garbacz. He was predeceased

by his father George Garbacz (1979), his mother Violet Garbacz (1993) his younger brother

David Garbacz (1986) and Tango, his beloved dog (2022).

A memorial service will be held October 2nd at Norwich University Cemetery in Northfield,

Vermont on the hillside overlooking the campus he loved.
