Ruth Ann
Hannigan
Mar 1, 1958 — Feb 15, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Ruth A. Hannigan announces her passing on February 15, 2025. Ruth was born March 1, 1958, in Sistersville, West Virginia, to Lotus Lee Brookover and Ruth Margaret Taylor. Ruth married David Hannigan in 1978 and raised their children together. Ruth and David met when he was only eight, and she was just 11.
Ruth spent her early years helping her community, serving as an LNA at the McFarland House and later at Woodridge Nursing Home. She also worked as an emergency dispatcher for the Barre Town Police Department and Rinkers Communication, and was an Emergency First Responder at the Barre Town EMS Station. Throughout this, she was a dedicated mother of six children, a devoted wife, and a loving sister and daughter. Other than a short three-year stay in Florida, where Ruth home-schooled her youngest and cared for her ailing mother, Ruth and David always called Central Vermont their home.
Later in life, Ruth worked at U32 High School until her health no longer allowed it. She cherished her time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Ruth is preceded in death by her father, Lotus Lee Brookover; her mother, Ruth Margaret Robinson; stepfather, Clarence Jerome Robinson; sisters, Joanne Ackerman and Jacklyn Sebulsky; brothers, Donnie and Bill Gaus; and grandsons, Christian Stanton and Roman Duprey.
Ruth is survived by her loving husband David Hannigan; brother Jim Gaus and spouse Shirley; son Douglas Hannigan Jr. and fiance Lis Castle; son James Hannigan; daughter Christina Currier and spouse Daniel Currier; daughter Jenniffer Duprey and spouse Philip Duprey; daughter Jessica Taft and spouse Marcus Taft; and daughter Emily-Ruth Tardie and spouse Max Tardie. Ruth also had the love of her 22 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and extended family.
Ruth's family would like to invite friends and family to celebrate her life this Saturday at the Bible Baptist Church, 68 Vine Street, Berlin, VT, with services beginning at 12:30. In accordance with Ruth's wishes for her celebration; we humbly request that you refrain from wearing traditional black attire and encourage you to wear cheerful, bright colors. In lieu of flowers, we ask that all donations be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice. We appreciate their support and guidance throughout the past few months.
