Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom Shirley Ruth Francis.

Shirley was born on June 16, 1931 in Winooski, VT the daughter of Armand Greenough, Sr. and Flora Fountain Greenough. She was 95 years old!

Shirley was married in St. Stephens Church to her beloved Herbert Francis on July 4, 1953.Mom and dad were married 63 years. Together they raised three daughters and one son and gave numerous relatives an occasional place to call home.

Mom loved her grandchildren with all her heart, and her great-grandchildren even more! Her greatest joy was hearing “Meme Shirley will you play with us?”

Mom held many different positions over the years, but nothing came close to being a mom. Shirley worked at both the Holiday Inn and UVM for over 38 years, but her dream job gave her the greatest joy she had ever known; that of a lunch lady. Known as “Meme,” mom was a big hit with everyone associated with the Winooski School District. Reunited with one of her good friends Nancy Augostino, they worked together for ten wonderful years.

Mom loved to play bingo and gamble in New York and Atlantic City. She would go with one of her best friends and sister-in-law Kathleen Francis.

Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank our Aunt Lorraine Greenough for the love, commitment, devotion, and countless hours she has spent with our mom. Lorraine, thank you so much we love you.

Mom leaves her daughters Debbie (Raymond) La Force, Diana (James) Roy, Joanne Francis and Patrick McQuin, and her son Timothy Francis. She is also survived by her sister Jeannette (Dale) Bishop; brothers, Richard (Carmen) Greenough, Gerald Greenough (Barb); her sisters-in-law Addie and Lorraine Greenough; her family from dad’s side John and Joan Tyner; and by many nieces, nephews, and friends who meant the world to her.

Shirley leaves the greatest legacy of her life, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Justin and Travis LaForce, Allison Smith, Danielle Cole, Ryan Francis, Matthew Bouffard, and Tyler Bouffard; great-grandchildren, Stellar and Gunnar Smith, Carter Cole, Kinsley and Bennett Bouffard, and Emme Bouffard. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Robert, Armand, Jr., Bernard (Julia), Raymond (Ruthie), and Leo; and her sisters Barb (Jim) Landry and Pauline (Frank) Kemp.

In closing, we would like to thank the staff at Birchwood for their kindness, support, and care of our mother. She made many good friends while in your care. Mom spent her final day and a half before her passing at the McClure Miller Respite House. This place, its surroundings, and staff are amazing. Our family thanks all of you at the Respite House.

In lieu of flowers, donations in mom’s memory can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105/www.stjude.org.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 6, from 5pm to 7pm at LaVigne Funeral & Cremation Service, 132 Main St., Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 7, at 12:00pm at St. Francis Xavier Church with burial to follow in St Francis Xavier Cemetery.
