Sylvia Jean Eddy Peet died at home in Richmond, VT on September 23 and entered Heaven's gates at 95 years old, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 20, 1931, Sylvia was the seventh of eight children in the Eddy family, growing up on a dairy farm in Hinesburg, Vermont. In 1949, Sylvia graduated from Hinesburg High School and then Burlington Business College. She met her husband Fred Peet at Hinesburg High School. In 1957, they bought the Powell farm on Jericho Road in Richmond.
Sylvia worked at The Burlington Savings Bank, the business office at the Richmond Creamery and then worked in the business office at Thomas Chittenden Health Center in Williston for 20 years before she retired. She gave back to her community in her later years by volunteering at her church, elementary school, library, and the food shelf. Music was always a big part of Sylvia's life. She played piano and spent many years singing alto in the church choir. She was a life-long avid reader and loved to watch the Red Sox and college basketball on TV. She rarely missed a Red Sox game!
Making time to be with her seven siblings was always a priority for Sylvia: Lawrence, Phyllis, Frances, Dwight, Emma, Paul, and Carol. They would get together often, sharing meals and conversation in each other's homes.
Over the years, Sylvia hosted many holiday family gatherings, sharing her love for cooking and baking--especially her homemade rolls! She baked countless dozens of those rolls for many family gatherings, church bazaars, and gifts for friends and family.
Her home was her sanctuary; she was most content when her day followed a simple, quiet routine. Her family admired her for the important life lessons she taught them about the value of hard work, honesty, patience, and the love of family. She once said "I'd say success is measured by happiness, health, and plenty to eat. So, I think I've had a successful life."
Sylvia is survived by her four children and their spouses: Rick (Stacey) Peet, Danny (Mary) Peet, Melissa (Kevin) Andersen, and Jennie (David) Erkson as well as 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. She was predeceased by all of her 7 siblings. She also leaves behind one sister-in-law, Joyce Bissonette, and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Dr. Pam Dawson at TCHC, the entire team at UVM Home Health and Hospice, Kathy from Visiting Angels, Age Well of VT, Richmond Free Library, Rev Katelyn Macrae and all those at Richmond Congregational Church. Sylvia was so well cared for, and the family appreciates all their support.
Calling Hours will be held on Friday, October 9th from 5-7 pm followed by a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 10th at 10 am: both held at Richmond Congregational Church. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will follow the service, and then we will proceed to the Hinesburg Village Cemetery for the burial.
